Back in the Driver’s Seat

May 12th, 2008 by Chris Self

Our amazing Joe Self is back in the driver’s seat! He is working as a driver on the remake of Friday the 13th. His TMJ replacement surgery was finally approved and was scheduled at Central Babtist Hospital in San Antonio for February 12th. Due to the long delay; Joe’s range of motion had been reduced to less than 2 mm for almost 6 months. I will spare everyone the details. I don’t know how he survived it?! It took 4 surgeons, 10 1/2 hours to complete the procedure. It is normally a 6 - 8 hour procedure. The results have been nothing short of miraculous. We are so very grateful to everyone at Central Baptist involved in Joe’s care. I brought him home on Valentine’s Day.

The ultimate goal set for Joe’s range of motion was 35mm. Due to his doing his home therapy as instructed (a real switch for Joe) and the physical therapy he has received since the surgery…he is already at 34mm. He can eat just about anything now. But, the result that I am most grateful for came as a surprise. He was on his way out to an appointment and was telling goodbye, but this time he leaned over and gave me a REAL KISS. I just started crying. When he asked what in the world was wrong…I told him that I had been prepared to never have one of his kisses again. These were tears of gratitude.

We are so very grateful for everyone’s support. We never would have made it without ya’ll. Thank you! We love you all!
